Personal Narrative : Why Math Is My Meaning To Math?

Improved Essays
Math is a subject that many people struggle with and I could never see why because for me it’s just a subject that is pure and its main objective is just to look for an answer, something which we can relate to. Starting school I didn’t see the point of attending or what was it offering, that is until a question that shed me a new meaning to my life, a vivid memory that I’ll never forget . A simple question that my first grade teacher asked “what is 12+12” the whole class knew that we still hadn’t learned how to add 2 digit numbers so you can imagine how scared we were when we heard the first 12, still with no thinking or hesitation knowing that it would be correct i answered 24, it was like a reflex not even giving the others time to think it; instinct had begged me to say it. After that I started to realize that I was good at math and every time we studied math I was never shy nor quiet all my flaws just faded, I had tasted to what me was life and I needed more of it so I longed to be the best at it from there on out. Starting high school I was put in a non honors math class and I had to show that I deserved more than that and I did my best so that I could see the distance between me and the best in the school. Sophomore year I was put in the honors math class at first I was so intimidated thinking the students were smarter than me but I excelled and I became the best, competition drove me. After that I thought it would always be just like that and that becoming

I am tired of solving your problems. You are incompetent, confusing and most of all plain useless. I don 't know a single job besides a mathematician that requires the use of math. The Board of Education makes me bored of education, and you are more useless than a white crayon. As I get older, you become more difficult to do just like trying to solve a rubik 's cube blindfolded.…

Sitting in a hard plastic chair in my math class I felt paralyzed. The heat in the room was unimaginable on the cool autumn day. I could not be the only one that was feeling it. At the same time I could barely keep head straight as the math test stared back at me with harsh eyes telling me “you will never be able to pass this class,” in a slithering tone. A drop of sweat rolled down the side of my face.…

When this department denied my application in the fall, I thought carefully about why I craved becoming a math major. Last time I applied I was becoming a math major because I loved mathematics, but I had no idea what I wanted to do with that love once I graduated. I wrote about the teacher who almost ruined my chances of being a successful student, and how vigorously I fought to get to where I am today. When the email came informing me of my denial, my heart sank. I had expected to be sad but I did not expect to be heartbroken because at that time I really had no idea what I wanted to do.…

Nearly three years ago, when I was only fourteen-years old, my youngest brother nearly died. My mother was away from home for the night, and she charged me with watching my younger siblings. I gave them snacks and put on a movie on our little computer in the living room, I remember sitting down a couple feet away at the kitchen table and starting on my homework in our cramped little apartment. My brother, Zion, had started to cry but that wasn’t anything new to me so I ignored him in favor of Algebra.…

Many parents and educators expect students to have plenty of math practice—but not TOO much. Of course no one wants a student to practice something when they already “get it,” but what do we mean by “get it” what is there to “get” and what is “it”? Sometimes I wonder if people view math as something that needs to be practiced in a unique way—somehow different from other subjects or activities. For example, when a child is becoming fluent in spoken language, there’s no such thing as “too much practice” speaking in that language.…

Growing up math was and I never had a great relationship. Although I graduated high school with a ‘B’ it was a real struggle for me. I was always a visual learner and appreciated aids that perfectly illustrated the point. On the contrary, my math classes where full of lectures and a dry erase board full of numbers and terms I couldn’t really understand. I’ve matured tremendously since high school and am adjusting quickly to the idea of having to take math in order to reach my goals.…

For as long as I can remember math was a struggle for me. I remember sitting on the couch for hours trying to memorize mathematical equations in elementary school. I was lucky back then, I had teachers who were willing to help me and even though I felt singled out I did appreciate it. It all changed in fifth grade for me. The teacher refused to assist me even when I tried to stay after school for help, I remember being so upset that I wasn’t doing well that my mother called and tried to reason with her.…

One, two, three, four, five, and the list goes on. I had a notebook in the third grade in which I would write numbers from one and beyond. Unfortunately that list was never finished; the fact that one could begin to write numbers from the day they were born to the day they would die and would not even be close to infinity is both scary and fascinating to me. This blew my eight year old mind. It sparked this passion in me to expand my knowledge of numbers, how they work and why they worked.…
