Flowers are a tool to express love. And it is a worldwide phenomenon. Marsh and Greenaway (1978) pointed out that in the nineteenth century, approximately 150 floriography dictionaries were published in England, and more than 700 specific meanings were given to different kinds of flowers. Nowadays, flowers still have their own meaning which can be divided into types, colors or numbers. For types of flowers, such as azalea “represents first love, fragility and passion”, peach blossom “symbolizes the sweetness of lie, loving life and being captivated or challenged with finding sweetness in your world” (Universe of Symbolism, n.d.). For the colors and numbers of flowers, take roses as an example. For instance, red roses mean romance, orange roses mean enthusiasm and passion (ProFlowers, 2014). Besides, ten red roses mean “you are pretty” and ninety-nine red roses mean “I'll love you till the day I die” (RoseforLove, n.d.). Each combination of flowers specifies a meaning.

Undoubtedly, sending flowers to girls help boys to express their love and create a romantic atmosphere, hence enhance the relationship between couples. However, sending flowers uses non-verbal communication, which means the communication is not dynamic. When girls do not know the hidden meaning of different kinds of flowers, boys cannot transmit their thought or feelings completely. Besides, there are too many symbols for flowers, and the only flowers symbol that most of the people usually know is “love”.
