The Importance Of Protest Music

What is protest music? In general, most people would say protest music is songs connected to current or previous events. According to Salamishah Tillet, “Young musicians, some famous, others grassroots, are finding their role in today’s social movements through a simultaneous revival and redefinition of the protest song tradition.” I agree with Salamishah Tillet that musicians are trying to find their role in life by exploring life. (I like how you put your own personal feelings you have towards this quote.) He is saying young musician follow their roots in order to find their role in life through their work and experiences. A protest song can come from any music genre. For instance, “Rise” is a pop, pop rock, and electronic. In some cases, …show more content…
The audience is really defined when Demi sings the lyrics, “I used to hold my freak back/ now I’m letting go/ I make my own choice/yeah I run this show/so leave the lights on/no, they cannot make me behave” (Lovato 8-13). One audience is listeners who might have bipolar disorder. This song gives them the confidence to be open about their disorders. Another audience is people younger than me because they believe that they are not worth being alive when people tell them they are not good enough. This song was written to help people my age and younger realize they are worth being alive. Both of these audiences are the intended audience. United States Department of Health and Human Services states, “Young peoples with bipolar disorder can have several problems at the same time. Young people may take a lot of risks, such as driving too fast or spending too much money. Some young people with bipolar disorder think about suicide” (“Bipolar Disorder in Children and Teens”). I agree with the United States Department of Health and Human Services; there are many people that have different disorders; not everyone suffers from the same disorder. This song is for people who have been diagnosed or who might have a family member or friends who display the symptoms of other disorders; for instance, substance abuse, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and Anxiety …show more content…
Whether you have an illness or suffer from something. Lovato wants to show people my age and younger that they can take control of their lives. She wants to show people that they can go from being insecure about their skin to loving their skin that they want to show it off to the world. She wants to show people that they can become their own person they do not have to be what others want them to be. The article entitled “Symptoms of Depression and Mania in Bipolar Disorder” discusses the dramatic impact of depression on this music genre and on music in general. In the article, the author states, “A person may experience the same mood state several times; for weeks, months, even years at a time before experiencing a remission or change in mood state. Also, the severity of mood phases can differ from person to person"(Joseph f. Goldberg 2-5) I think Goldberg comments are very accurate because he is essentially saying, people may suffer for a long time before anything really changes, which I also hold to be true. I totally agree with Goldberg because most people have the symptoms for a long time. Without a doubt, I would encourage people to figure out their symptoms in order change in the future. It is vital that people think they cannot be stronger because of people putting them down in the end, for it is only through music that people

The reasons why the protest of the National Anthem should be supported is because of the injustice, police brutality and systemic oppression that the people of color face in America today. Karl Marx, a nineteenth century German Philosopher, explained the world through two concepts, oppression and exploitation. The struggle between good and evil, the oppressed and oppressor is what guides every society, in every age and in this case the oppressed is the people of color. In 1931, George Padmore, a prominent African -American writer of the twentieth century wrote “The oppression of Negros assumes two distinct forms: on the one hand they are oppressed as a class, and on the other as a nation….. National (race) oppression assumes its most pronounced forms in the United States of America.”…

Everyone knows America as the “Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave,” as stated in our national anthem. I find that as a complete joke. The fantasy of the American dreams lies in the hands of the rich, white and wealthy. If a person does not apply to any of the above, freedom lies nowhere in their future. The amount of oppression and separation this country holds for its own people is beyond words.…

I strongly believe civil disobedience is a core principle in the development of our nation. Ever since the revolution which brought forth our new nation, protest has come hand in hand with change. The founding fathers learned not all battles could be won by lead and mortar. They displayed early acts of civil disobedience against the tyrannical system of the British. This stand against oppression was vital in the founding of our nation, and thus elemental to the development of our nation's values.…

There will always be an element or condition that needs attention or treatment when suffering from a mental health illness.…

There is a lack of theoretical research in the field of academia regarding the relationship of protest songs and social movements, and their influence on collective action. Protest songs are essentially symbolic compositions that describe an issue in society and often propose a specific goal that will ameliorate the issue (Stefani 54). Ron Eyerman suggests that one of the primary goals of protest songs is to engage participation through compassion and moral unity (447), which pertains…

In recent years, musicians have routinely used their voices in efforts to support or protest politicians and their policies. Some artists choose to release public statements in support of or decrying political candidates, while others choose to support or decry candidates by penning or dedicating songs to them. Oftentimes, especially in this past Presidential election cycle, musicians have denied political candidates permission to use their music in campaigning efforts. Some of these artists may choose to do so in efforts to keep their art as apolitical as possible, but many choose to deny political candidates permission to use their music in protest of them. Whatever decision these musical artists come to, they should continue to use their work to express their political preferences…
