“Frankie and Johnny” is a commonly known murder ballad written by numerous musicians that is about a woman named Frankie who kills her lover whose name is Johnny. [It] is a traditional American murder ballad, but you might not know it was based on a true story (Cellania, “The Story Behind”). Many well-known singers have covered this famous murder ballad such as Louis Armstrong, Lead Belly, and Johnny Cash. Their versions of the ballad are very popular but follow very loosely for entertainment purposes to the actual story of Frankie and Albert which is documented in an article titled “The Story Behind”. The article “The Story Behind” written by Miss Cellania describes Frankie Baker and Allen Britt as a couple who lived in St. Louise while …show more content…
Cash mentions that Albert is a musician which is a clue that is it based on Frankie and Albert, but he introduces him a guitar picker, not a pianist. Cash keeps the scene of the infidelity in a nightclub that Albert is playing at but does not allow the infidelity to actually happen (qt. Cash “Frankie and Johnny”). Cash dramatizes the ballad by describing a beautiful redhead that walks into the joint and sits by the stage during Albert’s entire performance (qt. “Frankie and Johnny”). When Albert’s show is over he goes and sits at the redhead’s table only to be surprised that it is Frankie’s sister who then slaps Albert and tells him to treat her sister right (qt. “Frankie and Johnny”). Cash keeps his ballad short and to the point, but vaguely makes the point known that it is about Frankie and …show more content…
Some are very similar to their relationship while others are dramatic and written mainly for entertainment. Lead Belly’s ballad is a good example of how dramatic Frankie and Albert’s story could be told while still being able to tell that the ballad was based on their relationship. The same thing can be said about Armstrong’s and Cash’s ballads although neither of their songs were as descriptive as Belly’s. Those stories were generally written for entertainment and provided good storylines based off Frankie and Albert. Frankie and Albert’s story has provided numerous ideas for singers to sing about and will continue to evolve with the years to intrigue listener’s and reader’s

The poet positively embraces her bi-cultural heritage, perceiving the dual perspectives of her parentage as a source of enrichment that drew her closer to other cultures. She feels very close to Mexican culture because of the sense of otherness that Mexicans feel in the United States; a sense of otherness that she can identify with. In an interview with Phoebe Davidson, she explains her attachment to other cultures, and particularly Latin American culture: "It doesn’t matter it isn’t my culture, I’ve always felt that any little bit of other in our lives …gives much more than it takes away" (1998,162). Many Arab-American women have sought spaces of empowerment and visibility through alliances and coalition-building with other minorities. For…

In class we read three books of poems that couldn 't be more different. They each have different styles of poetry and I got different imagery from each one. The first one by Donald Hall I thought was the easiest to read. It was like a book of short stories about his wife who eventually dies. Reading the poems in the book you can feel his emotions through his words and the imagery was like I was there suffering with him.…

It is self evident that Frank Sinatra has inspired countless artists in todays music world from all diverse genres of music. The two pieces of music I will be comparing are Panic! At the Disco’s “Death of a Bachelor” and Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”. Both, “Death of a Bachelor” and “My Way” are portrayed in different ways, but both songs are in relation to an end of an era. Although the song “Death of a Bachelor” was not inspired by a specific Sinatra song, Panic! was inspired by Sinatra’s compelling use of vocal techniques and his voice as a whole.…

    The Victims Poem Analysis

Upon initial reading, “The Victims” by Sharon Olds seems to be a poem that paints the picture of a life of abuse; starting from the dawning of the exploitation and arching over into the life of the abused following the maltreatment. In the work, it is made to be believed that the clear victims of the poem are the speaker and their family—which is a rightful and obvious assumption—but there is another victim that is not as prevalent as that of the speaker and their family: the speaker’s father. After a second read, it is made evidently apparent that although the work does focus on the speaker and their family as the victims of the poem, the ideal that the father is also a victim is explored. Since the father is depicted as an abuser, it is seen…

Postmodern Poetry Essay We analyzed the two poems, “One Art” by Elizabeth Bishop and “In Honor of David Anderson Brooks, My Father” by Gwendolyn Brooks. The correlation between these poems is the act of losing someone or something, but how they react to this loss varies. Within the short poem, “One Art,” the speaker seems to be dulled to the point where she/he has no care when it comes to losing anything or anyone and even recommends practicing this act everyday. “In Honor of David Anderson Brooks, My Father” is completely different in the way that the speaker is sad for the loss of her father, but recognizes and celebrates the fact that her father is in a better place.…
