UNAMSIL was also authorized under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter in the Security Council Resolution 1270 (Mangen, 2015: 29). Resolution 1270 “clearly equipped UNAMSIL with Chapter 7 powers….the UN [needed] a robust mandate to tackle potential spoilers” in Sierra Leone, because UNAMSIL was adequately prepared for its mission with Chapter 7 capabilities it was able to better protect the civilians in Sierra Leone and effectively end the war in Sierra Leone (Mangen, 2015: 29). Security Council Resolution 1313 further strengthened UNAMSIL with the mandate objective to “deter and, where necessary, decisively counter the threat of RUF, attack by responding robustly to any hostile actions or threat of imminent and direct use of force” (Mangen, 2015: 34). With the largest UN peacekeeping force in the world UNAMSIL effectively disarmed and demobilized more than 75,00 ex-fighters and the Sierra Leone government declared the war in Sierra Leone over (Mangen, 2015: 34). Security Resolution 186 was authorized under Chapter 7 on the UN Charter, giving it permission “on the island to supervise ceasefire lines, maintain a buffer zone, undertake humanitarian activities and support the good offices mission of the Secretary- General” (UN News Center, 2015). Yet while the UN mission in Cyprus, UNFICYP has Chapter 7 authorization the mission has not brokered a lasting agreement between the Turks and Greeks on the island and UNFICYP remains in Cyprus today (UN News Center, 2015). As part of UNFICYP the UN created a “buffer zone” between the Greek and Turkish sides of Cyprus, initially violence between the Turks and Greeks continued but since then hostilities between the two sides has declined (UN News Center, 2015). Before UNFICYP the hostilities in Cyprus between the Greeks and Turks was very violent, but with the Chapter 7 authorization of Security Resolution 186 and sufficient man power to decrease the amount of violence on the island and to efficiently monitor the buffer zone Cyprus has seen a decline in hostilities (UN News Center, 2015).
