They come to think that they must look a certain way or be a certain weight. If they do not achieve their often unrealistic goals they feel they must punish themselves. I heard of a girl who forced herself to run five miles every day. If she did not meet this standard she would harm herself physically as a punishment or not allow herself to eat. She was later hospitalized and treated for malnutrition. Being forced to gain weight she felt she had to damage herself. She was able to acquire a nail. She embedded it into her arm and hid it from the doctors and nurses. She contracted an infection and her health rapidly deteriorated even further. She came to near death because she put so much emphasis and importance on having her body be a certain way. Her obsession led to great illness and immense pain. Anorexia can affect people in a severely dangerous and damaging
