Media enhances communication to advocate policy change by making the public aware, creating high visibility and allowing the community to be heard and exercise their opinion, in order to influence change in policy. Once a policy is changed, the building blocks have been put in place for the community to work toward further change. The Youth Media Advocacy Project is a great example of how students and the community have come together to voice the need for changes in policy, through media, thus creating education reform. Many media advocates utilize the approach of goal, objective, target, message, evaluation, or GOTME, as it has come to be known. 1). The Internet has made it easy for a person to reach many. Expressing one’s desire to change a policy can get high visibility and influence others with the Internet and social media. Years ago, if someone wanted to present their opinion about wanting a policy change, they would have to appear in a town hall meeting, sign a petition or physically protest. People can still do these things but with the use of social media, advocating for policy change has never been easier, plus allowing for more target audience visibility. Sarah Joseph writes in the article Social Media, Political Change and Human Rights, “these tools alter the dynamics of the public sphere by allowing citizens to coordinate more rapidly and on a larger scale than before these tools existed” (Joseph, 2012, p. 10). Target audiences can be reached globally with social media. This can tremendously increase the awareness of a policy change. Social media has allowed Internet users the ability to write whatever they want, express opinions freely and influence policy change. Park June writes “Social media promises to deliver big changes in getting feedback from the public and attaining public input in policy”
