Maya Lin once stated “Sometimes I think creativity is magic; it’s not a matter of finding an idea, but allowing the idea to find you.” Lin has created magnificent pieces of work through her ideas which are shown through her famous pieces of work of architecture. Her simplicity that lies within her is shown through her architectural works as they are very natural and simplistic. The beauty lies in both the creativity and content of her work. Famous works of hers include: The Last Memorial (2009), Above and Below (2007), Timetable (2000), Wave Field (1995), Eclipsed Time (1995) and the Women’s Table (1993). Her works of architecture are done in such a way where everyone feels connected. The architectural piece of work that has influenced me the most was the Women’s Table designed by her in 1993, in which it guided me to create a tea cup. The Women’s Table was designed by Lin in 1993 which can be found in Yale University, New Haven, Green Granite. This piece of work can be seen a simple piece of work with a big content behind it. It was created to be dedicated to women in Yale University, since the amount of women who were enrolled into that college was a vastly scarce amount. In 1873, the first women were enrolled as students in which the population of women then began to develop in this University for staff and students. Throughout the university there were statues of men, but no symbolizations for women. The …show more content…

I was drawn to this painting due to its simplistic design and vibrant colors that forces the viewer to keep looking. The painting attracted my attention and every time I looked at it, I felt as if I found something new about it every time. As I continued to examine the painting its complexity continued to grow with every minute that I looked at it. Also, the size of the painting was large compared to the others in the gallery immediately making me feel that the painting had more significance and prestige than the others around it. The combination of the designs, the color and the size, overall made this painting an obvious choice for my research paper.…

Like most of her designs it is detailed with animals that are anthropomorphised and are ‘story pots’ which tell the story of her indigenous heritage. The poems “Phenomenal woman” and “The First Rate Wife” by “Maya Angelou” and “Cornelius Whur” respectively share several similarities on the presentation of women. In “The First Rate Wife” Cornelius gives an epitome of what he expects from his ideal wife whilst Maya Angelou speaks about how tantalizing she is. Cornelius elaborates on his expectations of his future wife. He meticulously expresses the features and qualities that she must possess such as “the maiden should have lovely face and be of genteel mien;” By this he basically mean that he wants a classy and virtuous woman. A woman that is flexible enough to strive in any situation being formal or informal.…

Maya Lin is an incredible artist. Hearing her speak only further helped me understand and appreciate her work. She puts so much of her heart and soul into her work and genuinely thinks through each aspect of each piece and how she can better express her thoughts through this art, so that these thoughts can be recognized better and more easily, as well as assumed and agreed with. I was also able to learn that she felt that drawings wouldn’t have been able to describe or interpret the idea for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, so she spent months at a time writing an essay of the description, and had originally designed the project for an assignment when she was an undergraduate at Yale University. When in the midst of creating it, she had the desire to not involve the politics of it, and wanted the piece to be…

Art is all around us, no matter where we go or what we do, there will always be a form of art that is nearby, and as a result of this, art has become one of the most significant aspects of a person’s daily life. In a sense, art is quite like water. It is something that is physical, but the changes that it can embody or bring forth are just like the formlessness of water. Art has become something more than just a work that should be admired, but rather, it has become a medium of speech for the ones that create it. In Dorothy Allison’s “This is Our World”, multiple anecdotes are used to allow the reader to better understand art.…

Imagine arriving back home after fighting in a foreign war and being spat on. All of the hard work and treachery that just ended with the war turned out to continue after it was over. During the 1960s-1970s, American soldiers fought in the Vietnam War. When the soldiers arrived back home after the war, they were looked down upon and were never truly honored for their dedication and sacrifice. In today’s society, we don’t pay near enough respects to our veterans especially our Vietnam veterans; which is why I chose to honor them by selecting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall created by Maya Lin and can be found in Chapter Two Page 81 in the Reality Through the Arts textbook. These brave men fought for our country either by choice or by being drafted either way I would like for each and every one of us to take a moment while reading this to honor them by learning just a little bit more of why and how the Memorial Wall was created. An artist such as Maya Lin has to consider many factors before they will create a sculpture such as the memorial. One factor that many people including myself never even thought about is the lighting and…

I drew a picture for the text “Fish Cheeks” by Amy Tan. In my drawing, I included many details to recall the story. The drawing is divided into two parts, one is people sitting down around the table which takes the most of the drawing space, and the other is at the upper-right corner of a Christmas tree and a calendar. First, the Tan’s relatives are sitting on the right side of the table while the minister’s family is sitting on the left side.…

Question 1: In “Interview With Julia Alvarez, 2009 F. Scott Fitzgerald Award Honoree”, interviewer Elizabeth M. Huergo, PhD., an English professor at Montgomery College, discusses briefly the concept of hyphenated space in the word Dominican American with Julia Álvarez. Álvarez states, “Uncomfortable space between is where the stories begin” (00:10:41- 00:13:00:00). Álvarez believes that the idea of being able to speak on behalf of two cultures, two nationalities are what make one a good writer. She also states in the interview that as a writer for her inspiration “is the pebble in my shoe … being outside and in between looking in” (00:10:41- 00:13:00).The feeling of discomfort helps one as a writer because it gives them the privilege to be able to look into the situation and in her case as a Dominican American, the different cultures.…
