What’s the difference between a man and a woman? Is it the dichotomy of the genital region? Is it the broadness of a man’s shoulders compared to that of a woman’s? Or, is it the intellect, the skill, or the even the strength? What exactly draws the line between him and her? “Alright boys and girls turn to page 370 and do all the even questions.” Those were the words of my algebra teacher right before an incident occurred that from this day, I cannot seem to degenerate from my head. “These questions look way too hard.” I said as I skimmed through the algebra equations assigned to my class by teacher a few seconds ago. “Of course there too hard for you, you’re a girl.” Pause. Brake. Excuse me? I could not seem to fathom the comment I just received from this young gentlemen. What exactly did my gender have to do with not understanding an algebra question? For a split second, I could not believe that he had really made this comment and just sat there and honestly considered the fact that being a female had every little bit to with me not comprehending this mathematic question. Thinking outside the box only comes in handy when working on an art project, other than that, all students are required to stay on the same boat and move at the same pace. Learn the curriculum, go home. There was no space for diversity. So, to hear someone else actually think differently from myself was an eye opener. To think that the student in front of me who learns the same material had different beliefs was outstanding. When the comment about women was first taken out of the boy’s mouth, I was offended because his way of thinking was just so distant from what I thought. The topic about women, a topic so near and dear to my
