Culture is a country or society’s way of life based on shared and learned characteristics such as beliefs, values, religion, traditions, and ideas. Not all cultures are identical to one another; some may or may not share the same characteristics depending on what region that country or society falls in. Before implementing counterinsurgency, one must be cross-cultural competence by having cultural awareness. This essay will offer cultural awareness of Spain focusing on three Operational Environment (OE) variables. Discussions will cover areas such as physical geography, military conflict history, analysis of weather and its effects on Spain, and civil considerations.

Prior to joining NATO and the U.N., Spain has conducted or participated in decades and even centuries of wars and conflicts. Two wars that are noteworthy in a discussion are the Spanish American war and the Spanish civil war. The Spanish American war was the outcome of Cuba fighting for independence from Spain, which the United States had investments on the island and the sinking of a U.S. ship named USS Maine. After three years of Cuba natives fighting with Spain, both United States and Spain presented wants and demands with little to no outcome with the U.S. wanting Cuba to have its independence and Spain not willing to let go of its government roles.
