Most of this debris consists of abandoned fishing gear, plastic bags, water bottles, takeout containers, and cigarette butts. “The world uses more than 100 million tons of plastic annually but recycles less than 5 percent of it” (Kiener, 157). This small percentage of plastic being recycled each year is not make a significant impact on the millions of tons that are being used and produced by humans. Miniature islands, consisting of plastic bottles, bags, and food wrappers, of excess plastic drift around hundreds of square miles of ocean causing havoc on our ecosystem and affecting the lives of numerous marine mammals. More than 267 marine birds are affected each day by marine debris (Kiener, 158). By having these products be biodegradable this would be a tremendous help to diminish the amount of debris that is aimlessly floating around. Marine life that encounters this debris will not be harmed, therefore, if they become entangles in the debris it would not be long before it dissolves and disappears; also if the debris is ingested it would not be life threatening to the animal. Making plastic pollution more eco-friendly will help decrease the number of marine animals being injured or even killed by these floating remains. This epidemic is not only secluded to one single area or country, however, is now becoming a global …show more content…
Exploring alternative ways to recycle or live efficiently more eco-friendly will greatly improve a number of pollutants that humans use each year. By diminishing this quantity of toxins there is a much better probability of returning our enormous and wealthy oceans back to good health. The absence of pushing towards becoming more eco-friendly in the years to come we will have depleted the natural resources we require to continue our existence. “Experts warn that without better protection, ocean water quality, fishing stocks, and marine habitats will suffer long-lasting damage” (Weeks, 865). Constantly keep in mind that we encompass an opportunity to protect our planet in several
