Conflict Resolution Styles

There are five conflict resolution styles to managing conflict. The five styles are Avoiding, Competing, Accommodating, Compromising, and Collaborating.

Avoiding is the strategy that involves ignoring the issue and differences involved in the hopes that they will go away on their own. There is no engagement with the other party, and thus no expression of a struggle, despite the perception of difference. An example was in high school other kids will pick on me and call be different names, but instead of picking fights with them I just ignored them and walked the other way. After a while the kids stopped picking on me because I didn’t care what they called me.

Competing is when people adopt a competing strategy in a conflict, we seek to win

Name the eight types of non-verbal communication. Explain each in detail, including a personal example of each type.

The eight types of non-verbal communication are kinesics, oculesics, proxemics, haptics, chronemics, olfactics, vocalics, and artifacts.

Kinesics refers to nonverbal behaviors related to the movement of the body. This includes gestures which are physical movements used to convey a message. Gesture examples are smiles, frowns, grimace, open arms, furrowed brow, tapping fingers. Posture which is how we frame and orient our body to another person. An open posture is when we have the majority of our body facing the audience or other person. A closed posture is where we shield our body from the other person. Also mirror which replicates the posture of the other person when we believe he or she is interested in us. There are five forms of kinesics we use in communication and they are emblems, illustrators, affect displays, regulators, and adaptors. Emblems are the relatively small number of nonverbal behaviors that can usually be correctly translated into words. Illustrators serve to emphasize a spoken message, and include things like pounding a fist on a table, nodding your head while saying something you wish to stress, or furrowing your brow when asking a question. Affect displays are displays of emotions through the use of our bodies, and manifest in a variety of different ways. Regulators often serve the regulating function of nonverbal communication. Different types of touch can serve to amplify a verbal message, reinforce it, and even at times contradict it, but the one constant is that touch is key for sending emotional dimensions of a message to another person-perhaps more so than any other form of nonverbal communication. An example is when I went to apply for a job two years ago. The first thing I did in the interview was shake the persons hand. This shows that I’m p;eased to meet them and it is a polite way to introduce yourself and respect for the other person.
