Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students

Sometimes as a teacher, we often do not know how to teach the culturally and linguistically diverse students in our classroom. It could be because we do not know that much about diversity and we do not care to learn about the students’ backgrounds. It could also be, we are used to the way we teach and we do not want to change our instruction. As an educator, our main goal should be to teach and think of the needs of all our students, this includes the culturally and linguistically diverse students that we may have. One way to do this would be by implementing the CARE program into your classroom.

The CARE program, Collaborative Action Research for Equity, allows educators to implement more engaging reading programs that will benefit the culturally and linguistically diverse students in their classroom. There are four components for the culturally responsive instruction. Component one is caring for the students. Component two is understanding and accepting the students’ communication. Component three is teaching the students through their learning styles.

It is important to understand and accept your students for who they are. By building a relationship with your students, it allows them to feel more welcome in your class and in return they may respond to you better. Teaching your students about diversity is key when using the CARE program. Allowing the culturally and linguistically students to share about the background and experiences allows the teacher and the students to learn more about each other. Some educators think it is too much work to include the culturally and linguistically diverse students into their reading instruction, but in all reality all you have to do is differentiate your lessons to meet the needs and learning styles of all your
