Reflection Paper # 3: Aspects of management and leadership in Alzheimer 's disease internship The strengths and weaknesses of "reducing the impact of Alzheimer 's disease (or AD) among African Americans (in New York City)" internship with reference to the subject of "Management vs. Leadership" will be analyzed in this reflection paper. The article entitled "The Work of Leadership (Heifetz & Laurie, 1997)" exemplifies the strengths of my internship because my supervisor, Ms. Paula Rice is demanding strong leadership skills from me. She is making me do adaptive work as she is shifting the responsibility of advocating the aims of the Alzheimer 's Association (where I am an intern) from her to me. Ms. Paula and I are employing many of the six …show more content…
For example, I permit the discussion to start, and I am paying full attention during it to see where it is headed. I also try to ascertain the concern of the person to whom I am speaking to, in order to ensure that the conversation is properly directed. In addition, I also endeavor to show my maturity by addressing people 's uncertainties, or frustration with the services offered by the Alzheimer 's Association. Thus, the overall goal is to further the reach of the Alzheimer 's Association, so that it can serve more people impacted by the disease. Disciplined attention is always maintained at the events organized by the Alzheimer 's association because it 's a national, and global organization which seeks to serve people of different races, beliefs, and nationalities. In addition, an effort is always made to restore order at the events via dialogue. Furthermore, my work is given back to me because I share the responsibility of my supervisor, and I take an initiative in defining, and looking for solutions to problems that the Alzheimer 's Association faces. For example, I will design a newsletter for the African American community (in NYC) with respect to the detrimental impact of AD, which will also instruct them to use the services offered by the Alzheimer 's Association. One weakness of the internship with respect to this article is that there is a challenge …show more content…
For example, we at the site have a sense of mission because we engage in dialogue with people to put our aims into play. We are also enhancing effective discourse with people in terms of raising awareness about AD, and telling them to use the organization 's services (thereby serving as an effective agent of change). In addition, we are identifying a leading public health issue (AD) and putting a potential action plan into effect to avoid or curtail its prevalence (thereby engaging in efficient negotiation). However, another weakness of the internship with respect to this article is that the Alzheimer 's Association is not engaging in political competencies because it is a nonprofit organization. The article entitled "Managing Government, Governing Management (Mintzberg, 1996)" is only relevant to my internship on the basis of its divisions of the public and private sectors, and its reference to privately owned and non owned organizations. It is because the Alzheimer 's Association is a nonprofit organization which lacks governmental

Session five was a big stepping stone for me, I believe I asked questions that guided her and properly validated her feelings, not to mention my powerful use of silence during the whole session. This reflection will shift gears from how I originally lay out my reflections. I usually express the goals I said I would work on and then share the progress I made during the succeeding session. However, I shared my uncertainty about where to take our session after the last one. I believe this doubt helped session five unfold the way it did.…
