Reflective Essay On Management 101

Management 101, consisted of many stimulating and informative topics. However, learning the contrast of the X and Y management theories was exceedingly practical and most enjoyable in comparison to all the other topics discussed. This class thoroughly taught me the different perspectives and benefits of each theory and that they are undoubtedly are essential in building a strong and effective foundation in management. It will not only be a challenge, but an enjoyable task taking on the personal challenge of merging the benefits of both theories. For example, not only rewarding good performances, but also motivating employees to work on their own and empowering them to make independent decisions that they can be proud to be a part of.

If I had the opportunity to do this class over again, I would undoubtfully approach the class with more confidence in my ability to adjust to technology. This class required more time on my behalf, but also a specific time to do projects. To achieve this, I would not have let external situations influence or interrupt that time. I also would’ve set more defined goals and be more disciplined to reach my goals by being more interactive on the discussion board and more importantly, being more organized and efficient in starting and completing projects in a timely …show more content…
I have discovered the areas that I have been successful in as well as the many areas that I will need to make improvements. For example, prior to this class I had no knowledge of the X and Y theories. Now I realize that I operated with the mindset of a theory X manager and had the same thought process about all employees collectively, which in return made me less effective and resulted in not reaching maximum production. I currently will apply this knowledge to communicate more effectively with my current managers and to better recognize what theory they most resemble and why they interact with me on the level that they do. This class will also assist me greatly in my future goals to own a business in which I possibly will have to manage multiple people in different departments. I now realize how important it is to manage people on an individual basis and not as whole because different individuals need different levels of motivation and supervision. In my opinion, relying more heavily on one theory and not the other has the potential to breed poor management because of this knowledge my new goal is to find the perfect balance between the two

Summary of Workshop Our workshop on It’s Okay to Be the Boss by Bruce Tulgan, contained four scenarios concerning tardiness at work, overwhelming deadlines, slacking off on the job, and being overloaded with work assignment tasks. One scenario was acted out for each group of two “managers” for a total of four sets of managers. The scenarios allowed the “managers” to touch on any solution presented in the book in order to reach the best resolutions to handle problematic situations with employees. Settings like these were used to demonstrate how learning to solve one small performance problem can diffuse mediocrity and better managing people before they get out of hand in the workplace.…
