In 1744, King Louis XVI came to power in France with his wife Queen Marie Antoinette. The King and Queen often did not pay attention to their people and rather spent a lot of money on whatever they wanted. They would have lavish and expensive parties with a lot of food, meanwhile starvation was a big issue in the country. The Queen is believed to have said “Let them eat cake” in response to hunger issues. French peasants did not have any representation in government so they were unable to get what they needed. When the peasants were locked out of the Estates General meeting and King Louis did not agree with what they wanted, which was for each delegate to get a vote in each state, they were even more angered. As a result of this, the 3rd Estate citizens soon formed a National Assembly, which split into two groups. The Radicals opposed King Louis and the idea of a monarchy, which eventually led them to execute him. Similarly, in Russia, the peasants were unable to make changes because they lacked representation in government. Czar Nicholas II was the ruler of Russia prior to the start of their revolution. Similar to King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, he did not have a great interest in helping his people and focused mainly on himself. Poverty was widespread in both of these countries and to make matters worse, taxation was high. In France, all of the burdens of taxes was placed on the 3rd Estate. Members of the 3rd Estate were born into the lower class and had no mobility to increase their social status. In the 3rd Estate, there was a bourgeoisie made up of doctors, lawyers, and other middle class workers, who believed they should have a higher social ranking than peasants and not have to deal with the same treatment as them. Because of poverty and high costs of food, the lower classes rioted and threatened the King. Likewise in Russia, poverty and taxes were contributing factors to the discontent of lower class citizens. An example of how unfair life was in Russia was the process of collectivization. This process led to the government ownership of all peasant farms. The peasants were forced to work in the fields, but most of the crops grown were to be shipped off in order to make a profit. Ultimately all of the work peasants had to put in, led to a shortage of food and famine.
