He too has not seen Odysseus for 20 years and probably has at least some slight thoughts of Odysseus being dead as well. When Odysseus returns the cowherd believes it is him just by seeing an old scar. While Odysseus was gone he stayed loyal and did not betray him to the suitors. He withstood 20 years of abuse from the suitors and never gave up. That is an example of true loyalty. Penelope has to be the greatest example of loyalty. She stays loyal to her spouse Odysseus while he is gone for 20 years. While he is gone she is also being courted by many suitors and is faced every day with multitudes of people that her husband, who she loves dearly, is dead. Nonetheless she stays strong and holds off the suitors and is rewarded with the best thing possible, her husband’s return. This shows that loyalty is valuable and well worth it. Odysseus’s crew has their ups and downs. Sometimes they can be loyal and sometimes not. When confronted with the Cyclops the crew works together and follows the commands of Odysseus. When they are faced Scylla and Charybdis they stayed strong and did not quit on Odysseus and most made it through the sea monsters alive. On the other hand, his crew also had their moments of betrayal. When Odysseus receives the bag of winds to keep the ship on course and get them all home sooner they all assume the worst and think he has tressure that he is unwilling to
