The Importance Of Lipids

Lipids are the most controversial of all the nutrients that we need in our diet, one could even say that they are the most misunderstood. So, what are they? Lipids are a group of naturally occurring molecules that include fats, waxes, sterols, fat, soluble vitamins (I will get to those later), and they play a very important role in our health, from maintaining healthy skin and hair, to insulating our body’s organ from stock, keeping our body temperature regulated, and promoting healthy cell function. Lipids are also the most energy dense source of calories providing 9 calories per gram, with a daily recommend of 20-30% from calorie intake, but even with all the great benefits from lipids they still get a bad wrap. They, play, and indispensable role in our well being everyday, from maintaining and promoting healthy nerves, and skin, producing blood cells, building bones, and teeth, healing wounds and converting energy, making it is easily to see why they are a necessity in a healthy life style. Categorized in to two groups, fat-soluble, which means that they are able to absorb through the intestinal tract with the help of fats (lipids), or they are consider be water-soluble, meaning that they are able to dissolve easily in water. Types of fat-soluble vitamins included; vitamins A, D, E, K. Great food sources for vitamin A would be beef, chicken liver, or spinach. Vitamin D salmon (which is a nutrient dense food, meaning that it offers a lot of nutrients for its calorie intake), or dairy, and vitamin E can be meet by eating sunflower seeds, almonds, or fortified cereals. It is important that you try to eat your portion or fat-soluble vitamin instead of taking them as a supplement because they tend to be stored in to body causing toxic accumulation. For example, too much vitamin A can cause birth defects in a fetus, or cause liver damage. However, water- soluble vitamins like B-complex and C are generally excreted from the body and have fewer side effects. Some good food choices for water- soluble vitamins would included sweet peppers, citrus fruits, and kiwi, which all offers you your daily dose of vitamin C. Pork, chicken peas, shellfish can give you your daily need for vitamin B. Unlike other essential nutrients, vitamins to do not offer any calories to your diet, yet add great benefit to your health. However, because of there ability to have highly negative effects if consuming too much it is important to read recommend dose based on your calorie intake or speak with your doctor. Vitamin’s role in our daily life is important in reaching and keeping a healthy life
