Everyone has obstacles that they have to work through and overcome throughout their life. I had many but I never knew I would have to face the one I went through. I was a dancer since I was 5 and it gradually became more and more apart of my life. I spent 20 plus hours in the studio and spent almost every weekend at dance competitions. It was and always will be apart of me. It was my passion and something that pushed me to have a strict schedule that taught me discipline and time management. I had goals I had to work towards in order to gain skill in my dance technique. This taught me how to set goals in school and in my life in general. I thank dance for making who I am today. I was taking summer dance classes to get ready for the upcoming competition season. I was having a sharp pain in my lower back for many weeks prior to my doctor’s appointment. I forced myself to push through the summer and finish my classes. I was also very worried there was something seriously wrong that would make me have to take time off of dance. I never knew July 17th would be the last time I danced for six months. I remember knowing it was time to tell someone about the pain. I called my mom and told her that I need to see a back doctor to figure out what was wrong. Two weeks later I was sitting in the doctors office waiting to be examined. After talking with the spine specialist he told me that I needed surgery and that I wouldn’t be able to dance for about 6 months. How was I in the dance studio a couple weeks ago preparing for the season to now calling my coach and telling my teammates that I would not be dancing? Something that was my whole life was suddenly ripped away from me by the simple phrase, “you are going to need spinal fusion surgery and will have to relearn how to walk and dance

We were all happy, mom loved her job and we loved where we were living, but things were about to change because when I went for my 15 month check-up my curve was at 57 degrees. My Orthopedic Doctor in Seattle Dr. Krengel always said that at 50 degrees it is intended for surgery to be done immediately. Unfortunately Dr. Neal the Orthopedic in Jacksonville didn’t have any openings for surgery until October or November and with my curve growing so fast, the surgery needed to be done as soon as possible. When we spoke to Dr. Krengel in Seattle he told my family if we came back to Seattle he would schedule me for surgery in August, my family discussed everything and decided that mom would quit her job, I have to tell you her boss was really mad, he couldn’t understand why we had to move. We gave up our home and moved back to…

In dance, you learn quickly that without pure dedication and drive you will never be successful. While talent can come naturally, skill and technique only come with hard work. I spent countless hours in dance studios growing up, working tirelessly to hone these skills and perfect technique. A lifetime of dance taught me what it means to have discipline and dedication to a craft, values which I have also seen reflected in my clinical experiences. So far, I noticed that I made progress in improving my technique as well as having a clearer focus while learning the combinations in class. I want to improve in whatever way possible to make sure that I can keep on top of my technique, especially since I look forward to striving forward through this semester as a continuation of last semester. On the first day back of the new semester, I already knew that I wanted to break some of the bad habits that I had and wanted to find any way possible to make the goals a primary focus. Even though I have my strengths and weaknesses, I want to further myself this semester to grow as a dancer by breaking some old habits that are holding me back.…
