As I’m sitting at the terminal at LaGuardia International airport in New York City waiting on my flight to Los Angeles. Someone speaks over the intercom, “Attention passengers, the flight to Los Angeles will be delayed for two hours. I apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused.” Thinking to myself, “What the heck, this always happens when I fly.” I’ve already been sitting there for an hour, I decide to get up and stretch my legs. Wandering throughout the terminal passing by overpriced gift shops I spot a Starbucks. As I walk up to the counter I order my favorite drink, a vente caramel macchiato, I notice the New York Times newspaper. Knowing I’m going to be here for a while I pick one up and pay for that also. If they don’t, they can overshoot the runway or not have the plane in the most desirable location causing hard landing, excessive use of brakes increasing wear on them, or crashing upon touchdown on the runway. When flying over mountains the altitude of the terrain is changing every second. If the pilot doesn’t maintain a certain altitude they can find themselves crashing in the sides of mountains.
