Since the mid 20th century educators have been working to implement more technology into student learning. One of the first technological programs was developed in the 1960s; it utilized a computer to help teach children geometry lessons and quickly have the computer help take over their learning process. By the ‘70s it was found that teachers, by using technology, could put forth less effort and help kids learn in a more effective way. In modern-day classrooms, it has been proven that having a class up to 50 students with one teacher could still be productive with this same method of learning. Students engaging in blended learning will use computers, iPads, or Chromebooks to essentially teach themselves their class’ curriculum. This lets students personalize their lessons. Lesson plans become more flexible for teachers and easier for students, without changing the standards of the class. Edweek.org says, “...students do not all learn the same way and that classroom instruction needs to be structurally modified to adapt to that fact.” With tools such as e-books, this is possible. E-books are online textbooks with interactive content that helps better explain readings and class notes. E-books are also “less expensive and take up less space” according to ed.gov. The one-to-one technology equipped with e-books, enables students to learn at their own pace. Children are able to work at their own pace and take as much or as little time to learn what they are being taught as they need. Students who have been working with technology have been proven to take more ownership of their learning, which has showed great strides in education. It can accommodate students who are being bullied, have medical concerns, or learning disabilities. According to dosomething.org apporximetly 160,000 teenagers skip school everyday due to bullying. When students are not in school they are missing valuable information that will help them succeed in their classes and in life. In the United States children of school age have been diagnosed with cancer and are receiving treatments that don’t allow them to leave their homes or their treatment centers. When able to use online materials either from their district’s school or online school they still have the ability to benefit from a good education. The National Center for Learning Disabilities reports that there are 2.4 million students living with learning disabilities. Disabilities make traditional school harder in a variety of ways. When a student has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) they have difficulty focusing. ADHD is one of the more minor learning disabilities compared to something like dyslexia. Dyslexia makes reading and writing hard due to the brain switching letters and numbers, this can cause tests, assignments, even note taking to be extremely difficult.
