The positive environment came when he met his senior language arts teacher whose name was Jack Macfarland. Instead of the typical vocational track instructor that would put students down or not care for their education, Mr. MacFarland pushed the students to work hard and increase the work amount, thus having the students push their intellect and themselves as a person. Therefore, he had them, “[write] three or four essays a month... read a book every two to three weeks,” as well as giving them a “quiz on the reading every other day,” (5). This system of work really pushed students to really explore themselves and their potential to work, thus McFarland was helping them develop a growth mindset because he showed them that despite the hard work, he knew they were capable of doing it. This is a successful environment that helped students care more about not only their general education, but it opened doors for them to use that concept of growth to their lives.
