Bad Leadership

The simplest way to explain bad leadership is that is the opposite of good leadership, however this does not give us any insight as to what makes a bad leader. The root of bad leadership starts with the individual and what his or her motives and/or abilities are. According to The Manager’s Bookshelf, bad leaders can be categorized seven different ways:

The first is the incompetent leader. This individual does not have the know-how to lead others effectively. This could be a lack of knowledge of the job or a lack of leadership skills.

The rigid leader is one who is overly structured and does not want or does not possess the ability to “roll with the punches.” This individual may be narrow or closed minded, they are unaccepting

Experts are valuable assets to an organization for the special skill set they possess. Individuals who posses expert power perform analytical tasks and are vital to the sustainability of an organization. The views, positions and calculations of individuals with expert power are held in high regard by other people and hence seriously impact their actions. Expert power is a critical building block in order to progress to other sources of power. For example, general counsel for an organization is a great stepping-stone that leads to other opportunities of power such as CEO. Referent power is generated from the interpersonal relationships that an individual fosters with other individuals in the organization. Reference power is gained and earned and individual is well liked and respected by other individuals.
Referent power is a result from allures than an individual has on people who respect and trust them. Referent power can also be generated from personal relations that a individual has with important individuals in the organization. For example a Human Resources specialist is the liaison between employees and upper level
