In our text, Leadership is defined as “An area of study marked by the examination of the behaviors of others” (p.378). After reading about the three styles of leadership which are transformational, transactional, and servant leadership, I instantly thought about a scripture which says “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:2-3, New International Version). The second leadership style is transactional, which is described as a leader who “motivates by contact and reward, promising followers rewards for good performance and focusing on rules and procedures” (Bass, 1990, p.48). A great example of this would be Bill Gates, Bill was able to develop computer programs and once Microsoft launched, he went and contacted different groups to not only motivate them, but to make sure that the information that he was sharing was being internalized and understood by his employees so that they could all be on one accord and keep the goal of the company first plus make profit as well. When being in a leadership role, you have to take into consideration a persons’ character, behavior along with how to reach that person so that you can develop a better relationship with them and push them to be the best version of themselves. The leadership style that I feel would be most effective would be servant leadership. Reason being is because you are a servant first and then a leader and regardless of a persons profession, we are all servants and want to lead people in the right direction and encourage them to reach their full potential. From the examples given, a youth leader is a servant for the Lord, in addition to being a servant for people in the church and by serving in the church and leading by example, he/she is leading a group of young people to the Lord. Now when we go a little further away from professions in the church and start looking at professions like a military drill sergeant, I am still certain that being a servant leader is effective. A sergeant is serving his or her country first and foremost then again, they are also serving recruits that are looking to enlist in the military and that person is an example of the military at that point to those many hopeful army recruits. All though these two professions are very different, they are similar in a sense because they are both
