In Leadership and Self-Deception, the book reminds leaders to see people as people and not objects. Through a narrative story, Bud, Lou and Kate teach Tom several important principles including: the concept of the box, collusion, and how to get out of the box. These principles laid the foundation for the overarching lesson from the book which is that as a leader who does or does not possess these qualities will have an effect on the culture of the organization we are leading. The concept of the box is simply how one views people in relation to him/herself. If we are viewing someone as lesser than ourselves, we are viewing them as an object. However, if we view someone as equal to ourself we see them as a person. The book also highlights that this is a choice that each person makes multiple times a day. If the leader is out of the box, he/she invites the folllowers to also be out of the box. When everyone is out of the box they are not focused on only making themselves great, but the organization as a whole. When everyone is out of the box more work can be completed more efficiently without all of the stress and other negative emotions that are a result of being in the box and collusion. As a leader in the BCM this is what I need to focus on is being out of the box toward everyone so that we can accomplish more. In my specific role as Community ministry chair, I need to be out of the box to those on my team or those helping with projects. All of our projects are about helping and serving people in the community of Troy, if I am out of box and I invite all of my followers to be out of the box then, we will be able to serve better because we will not only see every person on our team as a person, but also see everyone we are trying to serve as a
