Lillie Thompson An estimated 6,664,324 knee injuries were presented to the emergency departments from 1999 through 2008, equaling 2.29 knee injuries per 1,000 individuals. It could be caused by sprains, strains, or other injuries to the ligaments and tendons that connect and support the kneecap. In particular, the most common major injury to the knee is the ACL or the MCL. Also, they are mentioned further in this essay. So in your knee, you have bones, articular cartilage, meniscus, lateral meniscus, medial meniscus, two types of ligaments, collateral ligaments, cruciate ligaments, quadricep muscle, tendons, and hamstrings. There are the Anterior Cruciate Ligament, Medial Collateral Ligament, Meniscal Tears, and Tendon Tears. The anterior cruciate also known as the ACL is injured when your foot is firmly planted on the ground and a sudden force hits your knee while your leg is straight or slightly bent. This can happen when you are changing direction rapidly, slowing down when running, or landing from a jump. Symptoms of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament include knee swelling , hearing a pop sound, pain on the back side of the knee, and the knee feels unstable, buckles, or gives out. Female athletes participating in basketball and soccer are two to eight times more likely to suffer an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury compared to male athletes. Not only is there one there is also the MCL injury is a sprain or tear to the medial collateral ligament. The MCL is a band of tissue on the inside of your knee, that connects your thighbone to the bone of your lower leg. The MCL keeps the knee from bending inward. Symptoms of the MCL include swelling, swiftness or locking of the knee, and pain or soreness outside of the knee. You can injure your Meniscus at any age, also you can tear it by doing any sports. The athlete can be squat or be twisting the knee, anything with direct contact. In addition, most of the time older people tear their meniscus because cartilage weakens and wears thin over time. There is physical therapy, surgery, casts, splints, braces, shots, crutches to keep the weight of the leg, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines and sometimes you can heal on your own. You can try your own treatment that includes RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation). RICE is used as the first treatment for many strains, sprains, or other bruises and injuries. Also RICE should be used after after the injury occurs and for the first 24 to 28 hours. Physical therapy can help you be restored to full strength and movement . Surgery is made to fully restore the function of your leg. The casts, splints and braces help by keeping the bone or muscle in place so it can heal. In addition, they may give you crutches to prevent you from putting extra pressure on it and weight. Indeed, they can give you a shot in your knee to help give movement back and have less pain, it is called cortisone. Cortisone is a hormone produced by the adrenal cortex. It is also made synthetically for the use as an anti-inflammatory and antiallergy agent. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines are used to reduce pain and swelling. Without treatment, the injured ACL is less able to control the movement of the knee, and the bones are more likely to rub against each other.
