African- American parents were more involved at home than school when compared to white parents. Parents from a higher social economic were more involved at home, school and academic socialization than parents from lower socioeconomic. Direct effect of parental involvement on achievement and depression had a positive result. Home based involvement and academic socialization had a positive effect on academic achievement. “School-based involvement was not associated with academic achievement” ( ). Depression was not a result of home-based involvement, however school-based involvement and academic socialization had a negative effect. Behavioral engagement had a positive outcome as it relates to home-based involvement and academic socialization. “Future study should use multiple sources of information and multiple methodologist to gain a more comprehensive perspective on school engagement” ( ). Extending the study to a longer time period and through different grades will help to fully understand the effect of parental involvement. Using more than just the GPA to assess student achievement will also help benefit the study. Standardized test scores, school dropout data, graduation and attendance data will help with understanding student achievement and parental involvement.
Implications
Parental involvement is very important through out children entire school years. In high school students are looked on as more independent and parent involvement is not seen as much during these years. Parental involvement is just as important if not the most important during high school years as students prepare to start their adult life and figure out careers. Schools must do all they can to keep parents involved in their child’s education in high school and help them to understand the importance not only academically but mentally
