The stories such as Cinderella and tales you’re told or read to that give the sense of goodness in life that no matter what in life you’re dealt with such as being poor or treated different does not define you. It symbolizes in American culture how you handle and carry yourself, by being polite, honest, having the strength, power, and will to go on and not giving up. On the way she does develop some bad habits like saving her money so she may run away if she felt the need to either from her mamas mama or her father. Ellen resided in the beginning with her mother and father; who was mentally abusive and a drunk. Ellen did what she could to stay away from him or out of his way. Her family was her Mamas mama (grandmother), whom did not look at her nor trust her. (Treated Ellen as if she was her father and the reason her daughter passed). Now, the grandmother was quite wealthy, before the mothers passing she would send Rudolf t the house each week for her daughter. Ellen would take the money before her father and pay bills, buy groceries. Ellen has two Aunts, Betsy and Nadine. Don 't show interest in Ellen, nor looking to take care of knowing her situation. Knowing that Ellen young girl alone having to cook and look after herself and having a father in and out drunk and abusive. They were not looking for the responsibility in taking her in. During this whole book she remains friends with a young colored girl name Starletta (Best-friends). Ellen spends her first Christmas without her mother.
