Transcendentalism was first practiced by the likes of Henry David Thoreau in the mid eighteenth century. Displeased with society, Thoreau moved into a one room shack, isolated in the woods, where he wrote Walden. Transcendental ideas have been preserved throughout time by people like Chris McCandless. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, details McCandless’s journey all over the nation after graduating at Emory University. All in all, transcendental ideas have proven to be very relevant today. Not only are they seen in stories like McCandless’s, but also in TV shows and small communities across the country, preserving the ideas and lifestyle choices of Henry David Thoreau. Nonconformity was one of the original ideas that the first transcendentalists …show more content…
When Thoreau first began his stay in the woods, he wanted to escape society. He felt that the economy that was forming in the mid eighteenth century was twisted, and disliked the direction it was headed in. When he ventured out into the woods, he writes, “I lived alone in the woods...earned my living by the labour of my hands only.” (Thoreau, “Economy”) The days where the social normality for a man was to own a plot of land, and work it in order to feed himself and his family were fleeting. Cities were arising, and industries were starting to monopolize. At the same time, advances in technology made harvesting faster and easier. Instead of conforming to the new industrialized society Thoreau moved out into the forest alone. Furthermore, the idea of nonconformity can be seen in recent stories like McCandless’s. …show more content…
Throughout the entire story, McCandless is self reliant to find food and shelter, but he permanently became self-reliant after the decision he made in the Detrital Wash. A letter on Chris’s yellow Datsun reads, “This piece of shit has been abandoned...Walsh found a Giani guitar, a saucepan containing $4.93 in loose change, a garbage bag of old clothes, a fishing rod and tackle and twenty five pounds of uncooked rice.” By abandoning the majority of his possessions, Chris would now have to rely on his own skills to provide himself with food and shelter everyday. This was an extremely gutsy move, because if Chris were to be stuck in a situation where he needed a place to sleep or keep warm, he could no longer crash in his car like he had been doing. Also, he could no longer carry bulky items like food, which he could have used while in the Alaskan Bush later on. Today, there are still examples of modern day transcendentalists who are self reliant. Ethan and Sarah Hughes purchased an Amish farm in Missouri and have been living on it for eight years. On the farm they are completely self-reliant by growing their own food, surviving without electricity utilizing fires for warmth and to cook. (Sundeen, The Unsettlers) It is apparent that the idea of self-reliance was present in Chris McCandless’s journey as well as today with people like the Hughes family who decide they prefer a

He not only burned all the money he had but he also burned any traces that linked him to his former self, including social security cards. One major idea of Transcendentalism is non-conformity. Nonconformity is the refusal to follow a preexisting and prevailing rule. An example of a nonconforming action would be Thoreau refusing to pay a tax and going to jail for it, because he didn't believe in the Mexican War. This shows that if one believes in a cause, one must stand up to it, but also accept the punishment that comes along with it. A modern example would be the Black Lives Matter movement.…

McCandless follows this to heart. He refuses any kind of materialistic opportunity or luxury. McCandless practices the idea of minimalism when Jan Burres, a friend McCandless has met during his trip, urges him to take some warm clothing before he leaves: “'He eventually took...but the day after he left, most of it was in the van. He pulled it out of his pack when we weren't looking and hid it up under the seat'” (46). McCandless’s actions show that even those who manage to get close to him cannot persuade or change his lifestyle.…

He says, “Most of the luxuries, and many of the so-called comforts of life, are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind” (Thoreau 6). There is no need to accept the previously traditional ways of living. In an effort to connect to a spiritually rich life and to show the shortcomings of a common life, Thoreau moves a mile outside of the nearest neighbor and builds his home away from society at Walden Pond in an experiment of self-reliance. However, when digging deeper, the hypocrisy of Thoreau begins to emerge. In his quest to be within nature, he only moves a mile from his nearest neighbor with a connection to society still looming.…

Henry David Thoreau, an unconventional Romantic writer, uses his experience at Walden Pond to decipher the significant elements of life. Through his time spent in solitude, he ponders upon personal development and wishes to “live deliberately” and simply. Thoreau’s idea of living simply and reflecting on the important things in life allows him to realize that society is filled with a myriad of detrimental matters, including the prominent materialistic mindset, unnecessary distractions including technology, and a lack of simplicity. In “Where I Lived, And What I Lived For”, Henry David Thoreau effectively uses diction to emphasize the negative aspects of materialism, efficiently uses anecdotes and rhetorical questions to analyze the negative…

The idea of conformity presented in Into the Wild and Where I Lived and What I Lived For is one of complete denial, and that the only way to live is to escape from “corrupt” and “materialistic” society. Although the idea of non-conformity is presented similarly in both texts, they also vary in the level of extremity. In Into the Wild, McCandless, the main character in Into the Wild didn’t live a life of complete seclusion from society, unlike Thoreau. McCandless was accustomed to small societies that opposed the larger American society such as the several small towns he visited on his journey, such as the Carthage community, and “Oh-My-God Hot Springs”. A similar belief between McCandless and Thoreau was one of non-conformity, expressed in one of Thoreau’s metaphors, “Still we live meanly, like ants; though the fable tells us that we were long ago changed into men;”(Thoreau 1)…
