John Dewey, who was born on October 20, 1959 in Burlington, Vermont, was a twentieth century American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer. Dewey preached the idea of pragmatism, which rejected customary perspectives of epistemology and mysticism. Pragmatism “considers practical consequences or real effects to be vital components of both meaning and truth” (Pragmatism). Pragmatism was founded by a “Metaphysical Club”, consisting of philosophy students from Harvard University (McDermid). They concluded the process of a certain proposition where it is considered practical if it was successful. During Dewey’s time, education was more centered around content that had next to zero significance with student's’ interest or life. Progressive education is perspective of education that underscores the need to learn by doing. Dewey believed that school’s curriculum should reflect on the development of humans in today's society. He also believed that teacher often provide topics that makes students learn facts in one day to be able to recall that fact and use in everyday life. However, it was useless and have no absolutely no connection to the students everyday life. He formed the classroom by including an education program that is significant to students’ lives, showing them fundamental abilities for what’s to come. Later, John Dewey founded the Laboratory School at the University of Chicago in 1894, expected to utilize the school in nontraditional methods for getting the hang of, utilizing it to test his speculations of an enhanced educational curriculum and a different philosophy of classroom authority. Instead of structured lessons and specific instructions to perfect certain academic skills students are lacking, he focused more on student’s development mentally. Due to Dewey’s endeavors at rebuilding the classroom conditions and the style students are taught, students are instructed to satisfy their interests. As far as political perspectives, John Dewey would exploit the advance technology and social media world to advance his thought of advancing self-growth and interest. He would agree more to a democratic ideology. In today’s schools and education, Dewey’s system of beliefs can be shown through children in kindergarten having nap time and different learning styles such as hands-on activities. John Dewey prefers to take advantage of the social media world and technology to popularize his ideology of promoting self-growth and interest. He focuses more toward finding big idea and bigger conclusions. The ultimate result helps gain knowledge in the educational world. It can be anything that promotes individualisms and allow everyone to pursue what they believe in and their interests in the world. However, Dewey believes that the reality must be experiences and students must interact with their environment in order to adapt and learn from it.
