Jake Gyllenhaal Character Analysis

Jack’s physical appearance is slightly different in the movie, he was described in the book as “high-arched nose and narrow face was scruffy and a little cave-chested, balanced a small torso on long, caliper legs, possessed a muscular and supple body”. In fact Jack’s character went to some changes during the adaptation when he is played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Both characters are become more “prettier” then they were originally written to be more appropriate for the Hollywood standards. Gyllenhaal was also nominated for an Academy Award in a category for his supporting role. In the end when Ennis visits Jack’s parents, Ennis can feel in the air Jack’s father disapproval. In the short story his father’s words were described as “old man spoke angrily” (49) but in the movie his father seems more disgusted as he says “I know where Broke Back mountain is”. This and the fact that he knows and despite of that he didn’t brought his ashes there is a sign of refusal of accepting his son. Was Jack’s father a homophobic? In the book we can’t be sure but in the movie we can definitely see in his attitude. Of course not as much as Ennis’s father was, who died before the story started and we don’t know much about him but Jack never experienced homophobia in a way Ennis was. My point with this returns to the study, Ennis and Jack lived in a same place and time but they come from a different family background. This and his tough childhood could be the reason why Ennis whole character was more distant. Also, Jack mother is definitely comforting character while his father was insulted Jack’s ideas his mother only said good things about him. In the movie when Jack’s father reveals that there were another guy whom he wanted to move there with his mother places her hand in Ennis shoulder and offered him to up to Jack’s old room while in the book Jack’s father offers it.
