Analysis: Andromache Mourning Hector By Jacques Louis David

Jacques Louis David was a neoclassicism painter. Neoclassicism is a type of movement that they educated people believed that the pieces needed to show truth and not encourage the poor people to think that they can do a variety of things that they see in the paintings from the Baroque movement. Neoclassicisms is a set back to the classical paintings, and they capture the true form of a person. For example, can think of how the Greeks painted the Gods. Everything in neoclassicism seems to have a God-like feel to it. Neoclassicism can be determined by how it shows the characteristics of formalism in the painting. One form of formalism is line. The color use of this painting uses few hues, and it is muted giving the piece no emotion. Because the piece is giving no emotion, it helps support the idea of it being neoclassicism. Another type of formalism is balance. The balance of this this piece, Andromache Mourning Hector, is asymmetrical because there is equal weight to both sides of the painting, but both sides are different. The gold column and the helmet helps offset the piece, but gives it balance at the same time. The Andromache Mourning Hector has a linear style. This is because there are distinct lines with the people and the furniture. I would like to point out the woman’s face because the shadow is distinct and can see a line coming down her nose. Another style this painting is showing plane space. This painting would be easy to reenact and has great proportion. Finally, I would like to talk about how it has a close style. The painting is box in and gives it that closed space. The bed does go off the painting, but the column in the background creates that box because of the vertical
