When contemplating the concept of an afterlife, Shakespeare refers to it as : “the undiscovered country from which no traveller returns”. He referred death as an “undiscovered country”, prompting the unknowability humans contend with when discussing the concept of an afterlife. In previous centuries, when Christianity flourished, and more people believed in God, they also believed in the existence of afterlife. As the technologies and sciences developed throughout the centuries, the idea of an afterlife has become an idea that only exists for the spiritually devout, as opposed to the once widespread belief that reigned in people’s hearts. While Near Death Experience is involuntary soul leaving, there is people who can make their soul leave the body voluntarily. This is called the Out of Body Experience. The author of Journeys Out of the Body Robert Monroe is a notable clinical subjects because he owns the ability to leave his own out of his body. A psychologists Dr. Charles Tart at the University of California studies and observes him. Tart proves Robert Monroe’s ability by revealing “During one experiment, Monroe’s spirit went into the hallway and accurately reported that the lab technician who was supposed to be monitoring him was there talking to someone else.” (Smith). People’s souls are their consciousness. When the person’s soul comes out, the body is still alive but some parts that involve consciousness might be disabled. Referred to the psychological factor, when people is awake, their brain produces the Alpha Waves; when people are asleep, their brains remain function, produces the Delta Waves. When people’s soul comes out, Tart found out the brain is “neither asleep nor awake”, indicates that when people’s soul comes out, some part of human brain is not functioning (Smith). These two studies show that people have souls in their body, it is safe to assume that spirit and body can be separated, but also cannot be separated. People cannot see the spirit with eyes, and the body also cannot function without spirit. Therefore, after people are dead, their spirit can leave the body, the cells structures of the body fall apart, while the soul enter to another world where people cannot see them.
