The Dangers Of Deforestation

“If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound’(Anonymous). The answer is yes, because a tree falling is a forest will be heard by all the wildlife and will affect everything around it. Deforestation is a change of land from forest to non-forest. Trees are a valuable resource that mankind has taken for granted. Without thinking about the impact on the environment, mankind has plundered through forests cutting down billions of trees for selfish purposes leaving the land barren. According to the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, “46-58 thousand square miles of forest are lost each year - equivalent to 3 football fields every minute”(Rawles). That is 3 football fields of shelters for animals lost, food gone, and …show more content…
Many developing countries have the majority of forests that are stripped for its resources and imported around the world. Instead of pillaging the land, developed countries should aid in stopping deforestation within developing countries. Larry Schweiger recommended, “We must forge a deal that helps developing countries protect remaining uncut forests, which are vital stores of carbon. Properly executed, this will help mitigate climate change, provide protection for rain-forest biodiversity and help the poor develop in sustainable ways” ("The Road To Copenhagen..."). Successful protecting the forests in developing countries from exploitation will improve the environmental concerns that have been created as a result of deforestation. The automatic concern when deforestation is mentioned is the loss of habitats for animals and resources, but not many think of the problem you can’t see. When multiple trees are cut down, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere causing climate changes, which is recognized as global warming. Putting an end to deforestation would not completely solve the atmospheric problems. but it would stop it from getting worse. The existence of these forests do not just benefit the host countries, but contribute to the good for the atmosphere and environment for the entire world. Which is why able countries must take the action needed to …show more content…
As noted in the article, “Study On China 's Timber Resource Shortage And Import Structure: Natural Forest Protection Program Outlook, 1998 To 2008”,“International trade had increased the global supply of illegally harvested timber by more than 70 percent, and the latest trade data show that more than 90 percent of the logs and sawn wood imported across the Myanmar-China border was illegal (Hongqiang et al.).” The statistics how that internationally illegal logging continues to grow in trade, while little effort has been made to lower the numbers. Illegal logging is something to be concerned with because, is involved trees harvested in protected areas. Forests set aside to help the problem of deforestation are being illegally tampered with. Similarly to other illegal trading it is not the more simplistic problem to solve, but with the support and proper actions it is very possible to decrease the demand for the illegal trade. The World Wildlife Fund for Nature suggested, “To stop illegal logging is ensuring that powerful policies and trade agreements are in place in the US and other countries, and to encourage US consumers to buy wood products that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council”(Rawles). The United States and other countries enforcing trade policies regarding illegal logging can

Six billion trees are cut down every single year and used for lumber and more commonly paper. One tree produces an average of eight thousand three hundred thirty-three pieces of paper that is that means 49,998,000,000,000 pieces of paper are used each year. When all of these trees are being cut down with machines that create carbon dioxide we are also getting rid of the main things the give us the oxygen that we need to survive. A fantastic way that the United States can cut down on a number of greenhouse gasses in the air is by stopping deforestation. Hundreds of animals lose their habitats each year due to deforestation.…

According to Struck, loggers are clearing large portions of the Amazon and other South American rainforests for soybean farms and livestock ranches. He adds that a worldwide increase in demand for these resources is responsible for the clearing. In Southeast Asia, large corporations are leveling forests to manufacture paper and thousands of other wood by-products (2). Basically, Struck is saying that logging companies are clearing forests across the world in order to fulfill growing consumer demands.…

Deforestation and forest degradation is a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. Forests have a vital role to play in the fight against global warming. Forests and it soil can help absorb and store carbon dioxide and harmful gasses, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and release oxygen (Schimel p.135), but if forests are cleared or disturbed we will lose out on the benefits of having tons of tress. Trees can converse water to air vapor which help reduce heat.…

People fail to consider how their actions affect not only plants and animals in their ecosystem, but future generations as well. Throughout the years we have harmed and destroyed forest ecosystems and everything that lives in them, so it is only fair that we do everything we can to help limit the amount of damage we deal to our forests and wildlife. Deforestation has been around since…
