The Cycle of an iPhone “The cell phone has become the adult’s transitional object, replacing the toddler’s teddy bear for comfort in a sense of belonging” (Heffernan). The iPhone has become one of the most prominent contemporary technologies of the 21st century and has become a way of life in today’s society. We use them to make phone calls, get directions when we’re lost, and even capture the most precious moments of life with a camera, and all at the palm of our hands. The iPhone has shaped the means of communication between individuals and have altered the perception of what is considered a technology. The commodity chain perfectly depicts the cycle of an iPhone with its revolutionized implementation …show more content…
Each generation of an iPhone has become better than the previous production improving on its techniques, models, and efficiencies all exponentially growing and changing with the needs and wants of a society. Now the production of an iPhone begins with the design and manufacturing. According to eHow, “All cell phone manufacturers start the process in the conceptual phase. Several sketches and wireframes are created using different designs, features, and interface options, such as keypad only and touchscreen” (eHow 2014). As stated by the quote, the conceptual phase of an iPhone is the most crucial because this is where innovators embrace the first discovery or creation of a new product. When the new design is created prototypes are produced for testing and the new handset is approved while production is initiated. All the designing and development of the next iPhone is all taken place at the Cupertino, California based Apple office. However, like any other product, raw materials and energy are used in order to make an …show more content…
After the iPhone is completed it needs packaging and transportation to get to its desired location. There are multiple ways of transportation that the iPhone may take which is by plane, semi-trucks, or trains. While being transported the iPhone has a protective item around it to keep it from getting damaged. Plastic, paper and aluminums are used in the packaging which contributes to waste; however, some materials used for packaging are recyclable. After arriving at its desired destination the distribution/advertising process takes place. It is highly important to have good distribution of your product. In the culture of smart phones it is simple to follow one brand, but it takes a true entrepreneur to distribute his smart phone and flood the markets. To exemplify, when Apple dominated the market with the iPhone if it were not for Samsung’s perfect positioning and distribution they would have never become their greatest competitor. Unfortunately, products like iPhones tend to wear out or people just want a newer and updated version of the product. As a result, recycling or reusing an iPhone comes into hand. No matter how grandeur they can be, they eventually expire. Majority of technologies are built to last for a long time, but with iPhones constantly evolving and improving, the expected lifespan is 18 months. Non-functioning iPhones are disposed of by being put in incinerators and
