One of the main factors was the temperance movements two examples of this were the anti-saloon league and Women’s Christian temperance movement. The temperance movements were at the strongest in rural areas, they put pressure on state governments to introduce prohibition. The soldiers believed that the people stuck at home were patriotic cowards because the hero’s are at war risking their lives, so why should the rest drink and have a good time. The soldiers also believed that the rest of the country should not be drinking and should be in the factory’s manufacturing ammunition for them at war.
Also while the soldiers were at war they believed they were giving money to their enemy, Germany. Most of the breweries were owned by Germans so people believed that buying beer from the breweries would be like giving money to the enemy, many people believed this was the wrong thing to do under the circumstances, we were at war with Germany.
The final factor that people argued about was that drink was evil. There were strong links between communism and liquor after the Russian revolution. The USA hated communism after w.w.1 so people believed liquor brought evil things and thoughts to people.
