Components Of Motivation

Motivation is an internal process that involves energizes, directs and sustains behaviour (Santrock, 2006). Each of these components is equally as important. Energize triggers, you and gets you going, direct is about the choices you make, what you do, and sustains is making sure the continuum of the task or activity is worked on over time (Duchesne & McMaugh, 2016). In the educational psychology there are many key concepts that fall under motivation. Some of them being Traits, states, affects and interest and more. Two of the most commonly talked about concepts are extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Within the educational profession there are many opinions towards the topic of motivation. There are many view point of using extrinsic or intrinsic …show more content…
Stephens a former special education teacher titled ‘Encouraging Positive Student Engagement and Motivation: Tips for Teacher’ discuss about many ways for promoting motivation. One of them is to allow students to enjoy learning and working collaboratively with peers. Stephens also talks about how this “Focuses on the cultivation of intrinsic motivation, which fosters self-determination that leads to engagement.” (2015) This looks at it from a humanistic approach, by building up their self-determination, they build autonomy. This type of encouragement will help build and maintain their motivation. As a teacher my goals would be for this type of learned motivation eventually become a ‘trait’ of their personality and characteristic that is stable, long-lasting, and can be displayed in a range of situations. Also relating the self-determination theory, relatedness to other people is one of the elements that nurture intrinsic motivation, where it is about the need to feel emotionally connect with other to form close bound and attachment. I agree with What Stephens (2015) has said in her blog as this promotes intrinsic motivation. When a student is self-determined they have control in their self-motivation and does not need external motivation (Duchesne & McMaugh, 2016). In this blog they also talked about giving surveys for the students to take to learning about their likes and dislikes. In a way I do agree with this as I see it important to know …show more content…
According to Kathy Branchflower a primary school teacher in America talks about her class, and how her class leaned toward praise and reward (Extrinsic motivation) for minimal effort and achievement caused a decrease in the intrinsic motivation. She also says that because the student’s lives are too structured, where adults are consistently making decisions for them results in loss of confidence and motivation Flanagan (2014). She always reminds her students to be in charge of their own learning. So they are able to become more independent and motivated with their own choice. I find Kathy Branchfllowers opinion interesting as this links to how the current education system seems to be working towards in New Zealand. As the new and developing education system (Modern Learning Environment) involves heavily around students taking charge in their own learning. I agree with what Kathy Brandhflower’s thinking Flanagan (2014). New Zealand is currently under the change of its education system I feel like the ways Kathy thinks of allowing the children to take charge of their learning really matches with the education system (Flexible learning environment) (Ministry of Education, 2014) As a student teacher I can see this working really well with the new education

The road to learning for American children (K-12) is currently filled with potholes and obstacles which prevent students from learning to their full potential and from progressing from one grade level to the next based on knowledge acquired. Many children are promoted each year despite their lack of meeting grade level expectations. I speak for my friend who barely graduated from high school and is now lucky to have a menial job working for Walmart. I speak for my cousin who could have used more help in school and now has five children, possibly destined to live off the state. I speak for my neighbor, a little girl in the fifth grade and only reading at a third grade level while the school refuses to provide extra help because she is progressing.…

Motivation is a complex construct, but in it’s simplest form motivation can be broken into two main components: intrinsic and extrinsic. When a person is intrinsically motivated to do something, the desire emanates from within. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, involves completing a task for an external reason. By encouraging children through rewards, their intrinsic motivation is destroyed. When the focus of an activity becomes gaining a reward, intrinsic motivation is reduced.…

Every individual has a different education experiences. Over the years of community service, job shadowing and education courses, I have learned that teaching young children is not an easy task. In fact, it may be full of frustrations and different challenges. However, I strongly believe that teachers must make their teaching a lifestyle and not just some job you go to during the week. As a teacher, my goal is to push my students to their full potential.…

This type of motivation has an impact on a student’s behavior temporary, but does not give the student motivation in the long run. Students should want to learn new things and should not expect to be rewarded for learning new things. There are two different types of motivation in this category, extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation consists of systems or policies that encourage the child to earn rewards by behaving in a manner that promotes learning. This means that students will behave because they know…

I never knew that motivations had so many components to it. Inexperienced teachers wrongly assume that what motivated them as a kid will motivate their classes. Nope wrong. If you use the wrong motivation technique it can cause a kid to back off and to lose their spark. Teachers have great power, but need to recognize it and use it in a conscious, intentional way.…

What Motivates a Student? Motivation is the entire constellation of factors, some inside the organism and some outside, that cause an individual to behave in a particular way at a particular. A constant struggle for teachers and college professors is to get their students motivated to learn and for them to receive a high overall average letter grade in the class. In a journal written by Phyllis C. Blumenfeld called “Classroom Learning and Motivation: Clarifying and Expanding Goal Theory” explains how to get students motivated and she creates somewhat of a how to guide for those teachers that want to get their students to engage in the subject. She uses three main elements which are task, evaluation, and authority to get the students to engage and take interest in that lesson or subject.…

Motivating students has been a lot of trial and error when it comes to the methods I have used in my teaching career. Rather than run down the litany of methods, where I really need to start is my philosophy of motivating students in the classroom. There are two camps of students: those who respond to external motivation and those who do not. My philosophy for motivating students is that I need to get them to see that education (school) is valuable. Extrinsic systems for motivation work for students who care but just need a little push back on the road to academic success.…

learning theory which state that there are innate psychological needs which drive our actions (Hull 1943). Research says that we engage in intrinsically motivated activities because we want to not because of reward or avoiding punishment (Ryan & Deci 2000). Intrinsic motivation, associated with overall psychological health and functioning. It stems from the fulfilment of the three basic psychological needs in SDT (Ryan & Deci 2000). Research shows the existence of rewards for performing a behaviour can undermine intrinsic motivation, because rewards reduce an individual autonomy, e.g., getting paid to do something means you are working for the reward, not out of volition.…

Chapter 6 of Essentials of Educational Psychology discusses that there are internal and external factors that affect student motivation. Intrinsic (internal) factors include personal beliefs and emotions. Intrinsic motivation entails behaviors that are personally rewarding, for example a student would complete an activity because he finds the activity fun. A student participates in a game because she finds it exciting. Extrinsic (external) motivation are influences outside of the student, examples would be teachers and instructional strategies (Ormrod, 2015).…
