Throughout our disucssions we learned that people are inherentrly different based on life experiences and more importantly the culture in which they live. GlobeSmart was a very helpful tool in analyizing differences across cultures giving an individual the ability to “step into someone elses shoes” as a part of our mapping, bridging, and integrating concepts. I had a real life example of cultural differences in my very first discussion post where we were asked to share some personal examples from our very own lives. I spoke to the fact that I had recently married a Colombian and spoke to the nature of their high context heirarchial culture. Based on my post, I received an email from a classmate (who happened to be Colombian) stating that he/she was “offended” by my statements. I shared my post as well as the personal email with my Colombian wife who laughed and said “there is that Colombian fire we all know and love.” This is a great example of the cultural divide of such a global and diversified world, and specifically, this program in particular. Although I was surprised by the response received by my classmate I was able to take a step back and see where they were coming from and adjust the way I answered discussion posts going forward as the last thing I wanted to do was “offend” anyone but only to share my own personal expierneces. To this day, five weeks or so later I still do not agree or disagree with the

That day I continued to receive questions about whether or not I was the daughter of the Japanese ladies volunteering or if I was related to the exchange student who was also helping. While I was fairly used to people assuming my race was Asian, all those people asking me about my heritage in one day really made me wish I knew, not only so I could tell them, but so that I myself could be proud of who I was. Assuming one’s race based…

As we continue to read The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, by Anne Fadiman we continue to learn more about how cultural sensitivity is of the utmost importance when relating to those of different cultures. Cultural sensitivity is a set of skills that enable an individual to learn and interact with cultures other than their own. With diversity being our country's foundation, most have had some degree of personal interactions with individuals different from us. Individuals that reside in larger cities have a greater likelihood of experience with diversity, than those in smaller communities. Imagine immigrating to a country that speaks a language different from our native tongue.…

Some of us have repeatedly taken for granted what our culture has to offer. Certain individuals spend too much time pretending to be something they are not and too often forget to embrace the fact they are special in their own way. Others constantly judge people because of where they come from. Many think they are better than others and discriminate upon them heavily. Society has played a huge impact on the acceptance of cultural diversity over time and influenced negative beliefs to many in order to portray the view of a perfect individual.…

A wise man by the name of Mortimer Alder once said, “The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live.” We never outgrow the ability to learn, so we should continue to strive to learn something new daily. During the past semester while taking Composition II, I learned a myriad of things that are going to help me in my future such as how to properly cite in MLA format, how to not plagiarize, and how to become more organized. Before this class, I never knew the right way to write MLA format papers or cite. However, during this class I learned what information needed to be included in the citations as well as the format the citation had to be in.…

In the beginning, I looked at the different ways of preparing for a paper and one stuck out to me. I would write an outline of what I wanted to write about and then I would make sub-headings under each bulletin describing what each topic would talk about. I used this process more with my research papers than with the narrative essays because I could see what facts I needed to look up and which ones I already knew. For the non-research essays, I wrote the first sentence to every paragraph first. After that I would write an outline of what I wanted to talk about in each paragraph.…

When most people think of a history class they imagine sitting in a dark lecture hall taking notes off a PowerPoint presentation, memorizing a few dates and people, repeating it on the test. Truly studying history, I learned, is more than memorization of a previously told story and accepting it as true. In this class I have learned history is about actively engaging the material, picking apart the details and nuances, creating and using timelines, finding deeper meaning in the material, asking questions, then looking again and digging deeper. It is not a passive study and not about memorization as I believed at the beginning of the semester. History is about asking questions and looking for answers, not just accepting what is already there, but…

Over the course of this semester I learned a handful of things about myself as a writer, that will help me develop as a more proficient writer over the course of my four years here. As a writer one of my strengths is backing up my argument with solid and concrete evidence that truly makes the reader believe what they are reading. Another area of my writing that I excel in is being able to process great ideas that follow the guidelines and the prompt. With that being said I have also seen that while the ideas may come with ease, I do have a challenging time with getting the ideas from my head onto paper in a manner that isn’t so disorganized that it makes the reader second guess themselves. Another shaky part of my writing comes much before the actual forming of sentences.…
