When applying for a job, it is beneficial to have a college education because a designer is more desirable when one knows they are fully capable. The Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance points out that ?there are more than 120 accredited interior design programs offered through art, architecture, and home economics in schools?. Professional schools usually offer two or three year certificates or diplomas in interior design and undergraduate degrees in four year programs. It is highly recommended to take courses that inform on the government regulations and safety standards of buildings. One of the most important elements of the education for this career includes the portfolio requirements. A portfolio shows the resume, drawings, and sample projects of a design student (American Society of Interior Designers?ASID). The portfolio contains the key ingredient to a successful job interview.
Designers are required to be licensed according to where they live. Currently, 22 of the United States of America, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico require all designers to be licensed before beginning work. The difficulty of the tasks can be contrasted between the different authority levels in a firm, or by experience level. An assistant, or beginner, acts as a secretary for the professional designers. They operate the telephone, take messages, set up appointments, and run errands (Vault). As chances for advancement come along, one may become the project manager of the firm.
