The campus consists of 71% hispanic, 16% black/african american, 11% caucasian or white, and 2% two or more races. Of these students, 41% of them are LEP, limited english proficiency. Another 5% are identified special education students. (L. Busceme, personal communication, January 20, 2015). They are genuinely excited to be at school and like learning. They love, trust and admire their teachers and are eager to please. They have a strong desire to learn and are excited to learn about almost any topic. They are young and seem to learn best through hands on activities and being involved in their learning. They will need materials that are visually appealing and relate to their lives. Since they are young their attention spans are relatively short and they will need time to move. Kinesthetic learning would benefit this group. Lessons will need to be as hands on and possible and encourage students to question and explore the concepts. A constructivist approach would be the most beneficial for this learning environment.
Performance Context
The students will be learning and demonstrating their new knowledge in the classroom and around the school. They will participate in classroom activities to show their understanding of the concepts. These activities will include conducting research to collect data and creating graphs with this data in class. They will share their findings with the class and school. They will also be given the district math benchmark test where they will be formally tested on their understanding of the concepts
