The United States has troops stationed in sixty-five countries. With those troops the United States providing security for economically prosperous countries such as Japan. The budget expansion for the United States military began most noticeably in 1950. During fiscal year 1950 32% of the national budget was allocated to foreign aid and defense. By 1952 that number had more than doubled to 68%. After the Korean War the spending increase could be expected to resend but in fact it ballooned. In 1953 the United States began security measures to at least six pacific nations. Today 57% of nation’s budget is spent on military and yet we are engaged in only two conflicts, neither enemy poses a serious threat to national security (Politico). The countries which we currently protect are in no danger of invasion and their is no superpower seeking global domination. This amount of spending is unsustainable for the United States as the current national debt is approaches $20 Trillion. Senator Rand Paul argues, “we are not a stronger nation if we go further into debt… To me, there is no greater threat than our debt.” (CNS). As a result war has emerged at an alarming rate. From a financial standpoint it is unwise for the United States to continue its foreign policy. Our national debt is crippling the United States, preventing it from being a influential world leader. United States hegemony is largely ineffective. Time and time again the United States has forced themselves into situations to overthrow one tyrant just to empower another. This dangerous policy has led to the need for continued United States intervention and creating even more instability.
