Like a Bachelor’s Degree (4 years in college) to start off with. When interviewing Laurie Taxiarchou she answered back to a couple of questions asked about being prepared and what it takes. She said “For petroleum engineers a bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering is preferred, but you can also get in with degrees in Mechanical engineering, Chemical engineering, Chemical engineering or Environmental engineering”. Classes required to become an engineer are algebra, trigonometry, calculus, biology, chemistry, and physics (www.bls.gov). Most of these classes you learn in high school, and if you are smart you can take a test called the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) and it will determine if you can take the high school class as Dual Credit. In other words you are taking the class as a college class and getting college credits for them (www.dualcredittexas.org). Actually you are just saving yourself time and money in the end. You might also need a few Certifications and Licenses after you done with your classes for example a ABET (Accredited Engineering Program) or a passing score on the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) (www.bls.gov). A lot of schools in Texas offer engineering but the only problem are that not all school has a specific career for example, you could be a mechanical engineer, petroleum engineer, chemical engineer, Aerospace engineer, nuclear engineer and so many more. Petroleum engineers make sure there is fuel and machines to get the fuel, the fuel provides the basic building blocks for every other profession (www.pge.utexas.org). Without engineers, we wouldn’t have cars, house, phones, lights, plumbing, etc. They are important and what they do is not easy but it pays a lot and they love to do it. Some work that they might do is design and develops methods for extracting oil and gas from deposits below the earth’s surface. They also find new ways to extract oil and gas from older wells. They generally work in offices or in research laboratories, and sometimes they must spend time on drilling cites (http://college.niche.com). Ada Castillo happens to work for a major Oil Company called XTO energy and she is an Engineer Tech. She does the work for the engineers all they do is give it to her say what they need done or help with and she does it. So you really don’t even have to do the work just tell someone how. She is assigned to a couple of engineers and they are so young and living comfortable. She preaches to me all the time that the best job there is to either be a doctor or an engineer. Experienced with four years at the hospital it’s not anything interesting so why not
