Influence Matters: Becoming Who We Are “Be careful what you say and do, you never know who is watching you!” "Be careful who you look up to, you will begin to mimic their actions and attitudes!" We all have had someone say these words to us throughout our lives, but sometimes we wonder if it is true. Does influence truly have an impact on me? Is there really anyone that is watching me and looking up to me? Whether we realize it or not, influence plays a huge role in our everyday lives. Others influence us daily, but we also are the influence to someone else. Influence is the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something or the effect itself. Influence begins are a young age. We learn to mimic others when we are only a few months old. Learning to smile, raise our eyebrows, and make funny faces is all a part of influence. The people who influence me the most are the ones that I look up to. I realize more and more how much influence plays a role in my life when my attitude, actions, and speech is altered and becomes more like the people I am around. I learned that I also influence others, especially children. I work with children often; they are truly examples of influence. I have always been told, "Be careful what you say and do, children are like sponges." I learned that when the children I am always around start to say and do the things that I do. It is easy to get them to say and do what I do. They copy my actions and sometimes my speech. You never know what they will repeat, so do not say or do anything that you would not want your child to say or do. They may end up making you look bad or embarrassing you by copying what you do when it is something they should not. I want to set a good example for the children that look up to
