The Chain Of Illusion Analysis

Great Essays
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, talks about collective power in, The Evolving Self, as something that can be taken from one person or group thus gained by another person or group. He also brings in the topic of personal power, which is given from something or someone to another person. Power doesn’t just appear, it has to be given or taken. This explains what the “expression of power” he states is about. If we take the American Government for example, power is given to them by their supporters. Also it has been taken from other countries or from people who oppose them.
In a part of Eric Fromm’s writing, The Individual In The Chains of Illusion, he talks about how a government gains power. One way is by war; countries have gone to war with each other

Better explained in the quote, “It could be argued that they supply the goals, they foreshadow possibilities of being, that pull us toward the future.”(Csikszentmihalyi 227). Here the author is trying to show that not all power is harmful. It can drive us to making and accomplishing our goals. Also, the author is stating that without it we cannot grow or survive. There are also people who view power and war being necessary. The ones who are power driven especially in politics and government would disagree with it being a destructive motivator. I’m not saying power is bad; however, using it for the wrong reasons …show more content…
If we want to keep the same kind of government (which would be easier than building a whole new government), then we need to change it. When people get jobs in politics, there should be ways to see if they actually care about the job or if they just want the power and money. I remember my aunt telling me one day that she’d rather volunteer as an Emergency Medical Technician instead of getting paid because volunteering is choosing to do something. Where I am going with this is instead of getting a whole lot of money, why not have everyone who works in politics have it as a volunteer job. Then their hearts would be in for the better of their homeland over for personal gain. This would take a lot of protesting against the government. Doing this would educate people that we have the power not the government. We could petition voting and send the government into a panic. If we don’t give them the power, they cannot use it. Another way would be to get sources on the inside. What I mean by that is to get people that are in politics or going into politics to want to have it as a volunteer job, or to persuade by having rewards for volunteering, (such as free government housing for workers). No matter which path to take, it all starts by just spreading the word. The main goal is to prevent violence though. Everything this would be working towards is to stop violence and too much power for political gain. The only way that would be acceptable is if we

“Power does not make the possessor evil; it is the possessor who uses it in evil ways” (Wilson). Since the beginning of time, power is a force that has been desired and strived for, yet feared by many. Although it often leads to harm, power itself is not destructive; “Like money, power is indifferent in its usefulness to the person who possesses it” (Wilson). In George Orwell’s, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and William Shakespeare 's, Macbeth, the desire to gain power and the fear of losing it, results in not only corruption but a malicious use of psychological manipulation and the demise of many.…

Prominent in realist theory is the concept of anarchy. Anarchy in international politics is defined by Mearsheimer as a system of ‘independent political units (states) that have no central authority above them’ (Mearsheimer 1994). Such a system promotes the concepts of self-help, statism and survival which suggest that war is the result of independent states fighting for power and national interest in order to survive. Given that the world has only been at peace for 8% of all of recorded history (Hedges 2003), these concepts are of great significance to realist in order to dissect war and understand why it is so prominent in international politics. Therefore, the bases of this essay will be formed using the aforementioned concepts to outline…
