When she happened to fall in love with a another african american who had the occupation of a carpenter that was born free. Her mistress father Dr. Flint said that he would never sell linda to that man and after a heated argument he ended up hitting her for the first time. "He sprang upon me like a tiger, and gave me a stunning blow. It was for the first time he had ever struck me; and fear did not enable me to control my anger (1813)". Being hit for the first time from a man Linda realizes what the hardship of being a slave is realizing that she had it easy in the past years. At the end of the book when Linda goes through her journey of finding Ellen and being reunited with her, while her son Benny has left for California she states "It has been painful to me, in many ways, to recall the dreary years i passed in bondage. I would gladly forget them if i could (1829)".
