Last week my grandmother fell. In one little misstep, she hit the ground breaking both her legs. How is that even possible? She didn’t even trip over anything! Sadly, the cause of such breakage was due to her weak brittle bones. She never made time for exercise during her entire life. She can’t recall a single day when she broke a sweat. This complete lack of exercise caused her bones to become delicate and frail. She always had an excuse and never made time for her body. Sadly, most Americans are like this.
America is a country of excuses, especially when it comes to exercise. People often say “I’m too busy,’ “I don’t have time,” “I am too tired,” the list is endless! People will think of every reason in the book not to exercise. Yes, Americans

There are many different styles of HIIT. One can alter the time, intensity, mode, frequency and so much more. HIIT has a very broad definition: “brief periods of intense muscular activity alternating with recovery,” (Abraham, Dudley, & Terjung, 1982). The truth is the type or mode of HIIT doesn’t matter (to an extent). As long as there are rest periods and bouts of exercise near 100% effort, HIIT can be achieved. One study tested two different forms of HIIT and they had no statistical difference. It doesn 't matter whether one likes to bike or do burpees, high-intensity exercise can be achieved (Gist, Freese, & Cureton, 2014). Another study compared two HIIT workouts that were the same except for the rest period. Both groups exercised on a cycle ergometer. The only difference was that one group rested for one minute while the other rested for three. Even with an extra two minutes of rest muscular adaption and performance were the same in both groups (Edge, Eynon, McKenna, Goodman, Harris, & Bishop, 2013)! So choosing the style of HIIT doesn’t matter. HIIT not only is quit variable, is just at safe and effective as traditional in half the …show more content…
Many people tend to accumulate Metabolic Syndrome. This is a name given to a collection of symptoms people tend to have before being diagnosed with diseases of other issues. The symptoms include hypertension, high blood sugar, excess body fat, etc. One study tested the effects of HIIT on people with metabolic syndrome. The researchers found that HIIT reversed more of the symptoms of metabolic syndrome than moderate-intensity exercise. HIIT decreased the subject’s sensitivity to insulin, decreased body fat percentage, decreased blood pressure, and even increased aerobic capacity! These are some of the major problems associated with metabolic syndrome and HIIT was able to deceases some of the problems (Tjonna, et al., 2008)! Even if illness is already irreversible, there is still hope. Interval training may not be able to reverse problems but still increase quality of life. It can still be an wonderful medicine. In a study done on patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) HIIT was able to increase the minute ventilation. Minute ventilation is the amount of gas inhaled or exhaled per minute. With COPD patients, ventilation is very poor making it hard to breath. Patients were able to withstand exercise longer and breathe a bit easier enhancing their quality of life (Vagiatizis, Nanas, & Roussos, 2002). Even people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) can be helped with a little
