Fluid intelligence (Gf) is the ability to reason and to solve new problems autonomously from previously acquired knowledge. Gf is important for a wide range of cognitive tasks, and it is considered to be one of the most important factors in learning. There is a long history of research showing the improvement of Gf if trained. Moreover, research showed that gain in intelligence depends on the amount of training: the more training, the more increase in Gf. Thus, according to some studies, it is possible to improve fluid intelligence. Fluid intelligence refers to the ability to reason and to solve new problems independently of previously acquired knowledge (Jaeggi at el. 2008). Crystallized intelligence is identified by a person’s general knowledge, vocabulary, and the ability to use words and numbers (Plucker 2007).
Crystallized intelligence improves partly with age, because experiences tend to expand one's knowledge. According to Raymond Cattell, fluid intelligence stops developing at maturity and decreases fairly in later life. However, there is a controversy. Researchers have been studying the relationship between working memory (WM) and fluid intelligence for more than a decade. Some have argued that working memory and fluid intelligence constructs are closely related (Yuan at el. 2006). Therefore it is possible to improve fluid intelligence through training working memory. After considering this relation improving working memory became possible with the help of mathematics and other approaches as well. In recent years, there has been gathering evidence that fluid intelligence can be increased. However, there are still doubts that are not justified.
