“Immigration can be defined as the act of entering and settling in a country or region that one is not native” (Immigration, 2009). Recently the immigration laws in the United States have caused a lot debate. Some think that it is best to allow the immigrants already in U.S to become citizens. Others argue that we should close our borders and send immigrants back to their native homes. The reason a person migrates from their native country to another can vary, some do it for a more financially secured future or the high standards of living. When seeking for a solution where so many people are involved the country should think about what is best for its citizens and its growth. The basic principle in act utilitarianism is to do “the greatest good for greatest number” (Wall, 2004, p. 29). However act utilitarianism also says “each situation should be seen as different from all those that went before it” (Wall, 2004, p. 29). Meaning that when dealing with immigration every case/person should be seen individual for who they are and not just be compared to similar situations. The actions taken using utilitarian ethics will not make everybody happy but “to figure out right from wrong, to reason morally, is to weigh the amount of pleasure and pain an action will produce and compare it to the pleasure and pain produced by its alternatives” (Wall, 2004, p. 29).
