Cultural Identity Growing up, I learned that my family and I come from various cultures and backgrounds, which I thought was extremely unique. I concluded that my culture was unique because it was different from my friends that I grew up with because we were all different ethnicities. My race that I identity with is Caucasian and my ethnicities that I identity with are Swiss, Italian, German, and Native American. I grew up in Soledad, California, which is mainly populated by Hispanics so I knew my ethnicity was different growing up. I have lived in Soledad all my life until I moved to San Jose for college and noticed an enormous cultural difference, which opened my eyes to vastly different cultures. My friends growing up were lucky to be bilingual, while I struggled to learn a new language. My family and I only speak English; …show more content…
Native Americans are at a higher risk developing diabetes or having a stroke. Native Americans are more prone to diabetes because of the foods they eat, which would include lean meats, deep fried foods, processed foods, white flour, sodium, and refined sugar. Obesity is another concern for Native Americans because of what they consume. In my family, we do not eat a bunch of deep fried foods or processed foods. My father does like to use an enormous amount of salt, which is where the sodium comes into play. My parents did not want me to grow up eating foods like these because they did not want me to develop diabetes like my father’s side of the family. Diabetes does run in my family and they believe it is because of being Native American. Another influence that being Native American has on my family is that we can have a temper. My father always said it is that “hot Native American blood” that makes us have a temper. Since I am not full Native American, I do not get too angry, although at times, I do have a
