This, in and of itself, shows how we as a people truly have and are moving forward since this feat has been achieved in many parts of the country today with the parts that have not fully gotten to that point are taking exceptional strides towards getting to the point of zero discrimination. MLK points out how in his time period the deep south is so incredibly horrific that blacks there are exploited and abused constantly, he states about Mississippi, “I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice” (MLK 1). Although MI still is not all that it could be, it is not a place where the KKK runs rampant or blacks are attacked constantly. It, along with the rest of the south has transformed over time to a more accepting place for blacks showing progress and direction as a nation. No better example of a national emergency and tragedy can be found then 9/11, a day on which America’s unification as a country was strongly tested. Instead of a weakened and disunified nation, like the attacking terrorists had planned for, an instead stronger and more undivided people than ever before came out. A symbol that came out of all of this during the time was a lone picture of three firemen raising the American Flag amidst all of the rubble and destruction around them. This symbolism represents the unconquerable American drive and spirit that defined the country as one of great heart back then and is still defining it as one of great heart today as time and time again the nation is forced to come together to prove to the world, unfortunately through great travesty, that will not be divided and conquered. Thus showing that the US still has a great direction and promise as a country as all countries of greatness and ability have that unwillingness to not stop being known as first-rate and
